The problem of split comets revisited

چکیده

The results fromstudies ofD/Shoemaker–Levy9 and other recent split comets and comet pairs lead to the recognition of fundamental differences between breakupproducts of the tidally and the nontidally split comets and to the conclusive identification of the so-called dissipating comets as secondary nuclei of previously split comets, whose separately arriving principal nuclei had in most cases been missed. The primary attribute of the nontidally split comets is the leading position of the principal nucleus, with all the companion nuclei trailing behind, eventually along the orbit. No such configuration has been observed for the tidally split comets ofmore than two components. Dominant effects in the relativemotions of fragments derived from the tidal disruptions are due to separation velocities, while differential decelerations (due, presumably, to outgassing-driven nongravitational perturbations) prevail for fragments derived from the nontidal breakups. This diversity is interpreted in terms of major differences between the breakup mechanisms for the two categories of objects and between the resulting mass distributions of fragments.

That’s the Way the Comet Crumbles: Splitting Jupiter-Family Comets

Our current understanding of split, Jupiter-family comets is reviewed. The focus is on what recent studies of comets have told us about the nature of the splitting phenomenon. The goal is to not repeat the information given in recent reviews of split comets, but to build upon it. In particular, we discuss comets that have suffered splitting or fragmentation events in the past few years. These i...

SOLVING FUZZY LINEAR PROGRAMMING PROBLEMS WITH LINEAR MEMBERSHIP FUNCTIONS-REVISITED

Recently, Gasimov and Yenilmez proposed an approach for solving two kinds of fuzzy linear programming (FLP) problems. Through the approach, each FLP problem is first defuzzified into an equivalent crisp problem which is non-linear and even non-convex. Then, the crisp problem is solved by the use of the modified subgradient method. In this paper we will have another look at the earlier defuzzifi...

Developing the Inventory Routing Problem with Backhauls, Heterogeneous Fleet and Split Service

One of the most important points in a supply chain is customer-driven modeling, which reduces the bullwhip effect in the supply chain, as well as the costs of investment on the inventory and efficient transshipment of the products. Their homogeneity is reflected in the Inventory Routing Problem, which is a combination of distribution and inventory management. This paper expands the classical In...

The critical branching random walk in a random environment dies out

We study the possibility for branching random walks in random environment (BRWRE) to survive. The particles perform simple symmetric random walks on the d-dimensional integer lattice, while at each time unit, they split into independent copies according to time-space i.i.d. offspring distributions. As noted by Comets and Yoshida, the BRWRE is naturally associated with the directed polymers in r...

Origin and Dynamical Evolution of Comets and Their Reservoirs

This text was originally written to accompany a series of lectures that I gave at the ‘35th Saas-Fee advanced course’ in Switzerland and at the Institute for Astronomy of the University of Hawaii. It reviews my current understanding of the dynamics of comets and of the origin and primordial sculpting of their reservoirs. It starts discussing the structure of the Kuiper belt and the current dyna...
